Brit Award? Sh*t Award!

Yet another evening wasted on watching the Brits (or as it should be known: the "Let's Give Robbie Williams an Award Show"). They must take us for fools; two years ago there was uproar because Robbie Williams won an award when he hadn't released anything that year - it was explained that the Brits actually "celebrate the previous year's music" and Robbie had an album out then. So please explain why Dido was nominated when her album did fuck all sales last year but picked up once she jumped on the Eminem bandwagon this year?

Please explain how the fucking hell Westlife qualified for "Best Newcomer"?

The sales of U2's latest album not doing the business? Fine! We'll give 'em a "lifetime achievement" award, that'll get the new disc (and the back catalogue) flying off the shelves! (Admittedly, they put on a good show - a relief after watching all the other 'acts' miming and shuffling about).

Although I'm no fan of either artists:

a. Oasis had an album out last year but got absolutely no recognition.

b. Craig David exploded onto the music scene in a burst of media hype and radio play for his singles, gets nominated six times; yet goes home to his crib with nothing! Go figure.

It seems that there is room for one "indie" band at the Brits; last year was Travis, this year it's Coldplay. What scruffy, obscure, "signed for the sake of it" token indie band will win next year?

ooh I'm an old cynic, but the music industry is just so transparent and the Brit awards show is just another marketing exercise.

Take the 1999 Brits, best newcomer went to Belle & Sebastian when Steps were told that they had won it. So what happens in 2000? Steps win a made up award for being on tour or something, just to get the sales up and to prevent the teeny punters getting upset.

I mean, what purpose did it serve to have The Popstars there? Haven't they had enough exposure? Why did they make such a big deal about singing live when there were three backing singers obviously holding them up?

It's not enough that there's a murmur of discontent about manufactured pop acts miming on stage, there should be a teenage uprising about it. But nobody cares.
